When crackerjack workers from American Demolition removed the cornerstone of the former Sixth Street School building Friday morning, they found a historian’s version of a toy surprise.

Workers removed the cornerstone at the northeast base of the building, which once housed Sixth Street School in Geneva and most recently had been the home of the Regional Office of Education, early Friday as the final piece of the above-ground superstructure demolition. The one-block property is being purchased by the Geneva Library District as a possible site for a future campus.

Kane County Executive Director of Building Management Don Biggs said historical evidence and testimony indicated that a time capsule might have been placed somewhere near the cornerstone, possibly buried underground. But that was not the case.

“When they lifted it up, they found it underneath,” Biggs said a little before 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 25.

The cornerstone and the time capsule are set to be delivered to the Geneva History Museum. This article will be updated when more information is available about when and where the time capsule will be opened.
