UPDATE 4:05 p.m. Monday

A Winter Storm Warning has been extended Monday and the outlook calls for more rain Tuesday morning.

Accumulating freezing rain and sleet will continue for the Kane County area as the Winter Storm Warning has been extended by National Weather Service until 9 p.m., Monday, Dec. 28, 2015, according to a situation report by the Kane County’s Office of Emergency Management. Due to the increasing sleet and freezing rain, law enforcement has responded to numerous reports of property damage vehicle accidents along with numerous motorist assists.

ComEd is reporting approximately 757 of their customers in Kane County are currently without electrical power.

The Kane County Division of Transportation is reporting the county roads are currently slushy but passable and that the Monday night commute will be slow. Sheriff’s deputies are reporting IL Route 47 near Lily Lake and Elburn is becoming sleet/snow covered with drifts knee deep and is currently closed in that area due to a vehicle crash.

The National Weather Service-Chicago says to expect more rain and/or ice on Tuesday morning.

The forecast calls for a chance of rain and snow, mainly before 9 a.m. The rest of the day will be cloudy, with a temperature falling to around 31 degrees by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015. The winds won’t be as strong Tuesday as they were Monday. They’ll be out of the west, 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

After that, it’s going to get colder, with forecasts calling for a high of 19 on New Year’s Eve night and 23 on New Year’s Day.

Welcome to Monday after the Christmas holiday. And welcome to winter.

The National Weather Service-Chicago says a “significant ice storm” is likely Monday, Dec. 28, 2015. So likely, in fact that it has update its Winter Storm Warning into a Winter Storm Watch in effect from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday.

Originally, the NSW-C predicted ice accumulation that could exceed a quarter inch, but the warning is for sleet, freezing rain and strong winds from the east of 25 to 35 mph with gusts as high as 5p mph.

Travel may become dangerous, with ice-covered roads.

“Tree limbs and power lines may become weighted from the ice and blown down with power outages possible,” the NWS-C Storm Watch says.

The Weather Service suggests altering or canceling unnecessary travel.

Flood Warning UPDATE

The Flood Warning continues for the following rivers in Illinois and Indiana:

• Des Plaines River near Russell affecting Lake County
• Des Plaines River near Gurnee affecting Lake County
• Fox River at Algonquin Tailwater affecting Kane and McHenry Counties
• Fox River at Montgomery affecting Kane and Kendall Counties
• Fox River at Dayton affecting La Salle County
• Iroquois River at Iroquois affecting Iroquois County
• Kankakee River at Shelby affecting Lake and Newton Counties
• Kankakee River near Wilmington affecting Grundy and Will Counties
• Vermilion River at Pontiac affecting Livingston County
• Vermilion River near Leonore affecting La Salle County

At 10:30 a.m. Monday, the stage was 9.0 feet. Flood stage is 9.5 feet.

The forecast says the river will rise above the flood stage by early Wednesday morning and continue to rise to near 9.8 feet by early Thursday morning.
