Randall Road is reopened in South Elgin following emergency railroad repairs by Canadian National Railroad on Monday and Tuesday, but additional work is needed to smooth out the grade level of the road, and officials are advising drivers to avoid the area if possible.

The Kane County Division of Transportation issued a news release at 4:20 p.m. today (Wednesday, June 22, 2016) saying the road on both sides of the track will need to be primed, paved and striped. Work will begin at 6 a.m. Thursday, June 23, at the Randall Road CNRR crossing between Gyorr Avenue and Hopps Road.

“Basically what happened is that (CNRR) raised the level of the track about 6 inches, and there was a noticeable bump — people couldn’t drive over it at highway speeds — so they’ll have to pave about 150 feet on both sides,” KDOT Director Carl Schoedel said in a brief phone conversation Wednesday.

The paving work will result in temporary lane closures and traffic interruptions. Motorists should pay extra attention to changing lane configurations and any flaggers directing trucks and/or the motoring public.

KDOT suggests drivers add extra time to your commute and consider alternate routes, if possible.

“We thank you for your patience and understanding as the CNRR works to address this crossing,” the news release said.

Randall Road had been closed on Monday, June 20, and Tuesday, June 21, and drivers had to follow a posted detour route using Bowes Road, McLean Boulevard and Stearns Road.
