• KCAC’s Adorable, Adoptable Pet of the Week is written by Tecla Metzel of Kane County Animal Control.

G’day, mate! Welcome to Kane County Animal Control! My name is Big Jimmy, but you can call me BJ for short.

I’m a Budgerigar or Budgie and we’re native to Australia. I belong to a tribe called Platycercini. We live in groups of 20 to 60 birds in the wild where we fly miles and miles to find food and water. Maybe that’s why we’re considered very social and hardy birds and make great pets.

I was found as a stray on someone’s patio. I don’t know how far I flew, but I really would like to find a loving home that has another parakeet like me.

If that’s not possible, then I hope my owner will play with me and let me get a few words in edgewise because I have a lot to say. I may be a bit shy at first, but give me time and I will definitely brighten up your home with my singing and chirping.

• James Buttons, our German Shorthaired-Pointer-mix puppy, was finally ready for adoption, and lo and behold, found his soulmate that very day. Congratulations, James!
• Bruce, the superhero orange kitten named for Bruce Wayne, has been adopted and is living the life of a contented cat. Congratulations, Bruce!
• Chuck, a young male pit bull mix with a furrowed brow, has given up shelter life for a forever home of his own. Happy tails, Chuck!
• Long tall Sally, the brindle pit bull with a goofy grin, is still waiting for her Mustang family to adopt her.
• Doris, the 3-year-old brown and white pit bull with the “que sera, sera” attitude is waiting for her forever family.
• Judy, the “big girls have more fun” pit bull is still up for adoption and waiting for her soul mate to adopt her.

How to Adopt

All Kane County Animal Control adoptable cats and dogs are spayed/neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on all vaccines including rabies. They are tested for feline leukemia/FIV and heartworm. The adoption fee is $200 for dogs and $100 for cats. As mentioned above, the adoption fee for Big Jimmy is $20.

About Kane County Animal Control

It is the duty of the Animal Control Department to:

• Ensure that all domesticated dogs and cats over 4 months of age are vaccinated against rabies and have a Kane County rabies tag.
• Ensure that all reported animal bites are given precautionary attention in relation to the possibility rabies infection.
• Ensure that pet owners are instructed on proper procedures pertaining to animal bites and enforce adherence to these procedures.
• Contain loose\stray dogs in unincorporated Kane County and those towns and villages with whom contracted.
• Investigate nuisance dog complaints in unincorporated Kane County and those towns and villages with whom contracted.
• Investigate complaints of neglected and\or abused dogs.
