North Aurora Police: Don’t Get Taken In By This $173 ‘Parking Violation’ Scam

The North Aurora Police Department is cautioning residents not to fall for a parking violation scam that has surfaced in the area.

On Monday (Sept. 26, 2016) morning, residents from the 400 block of West State Street in North Aurora discovered a “parking violation” flyer on their car parked in their driveway. (See the attached photo.)

unnamed-6The flyer indicated that the vehicle was illegally parked and would be towed after 24 hours. Furthermore, the flyer indicated that the owner would have to appear in court if a “fee” of $173.74 wasn’t paid within 10 days.

The resident did not believe the notice was official and notified police Monday morning.

North Aurora Police Department Patrol Operations Officer Scott Buziecki  said any notice or ordinance citation issued by the North Aurora Police Department would clearly have the department’s name on it as well as the signature and badge number of the issuing officer.

If you have any doubt about the authenticity of a notice or citation, North Aurora residents are asked to call the department at (630) 897-8705. Official North Aurora ordinance violations can be paid in person at the Police Department or Village Hall.

“We advise against making any payment over the phone,” Buziecki said Tuesday in a Nixle email blast.

Residents of any other community in Kane County who experience a similar scam should call your local police department. A list of links to Kane County city and village websites can be found on the communities page of the Kane County website.

For residents of unincorporated areas of Kane County, contact the Kane County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office non-emergency telephone number is 630-232-6840 and its email address is KaneSheriff@co.kane.il.us.
