The Kane County Board voted 20-3 Tuesday (June 13, 2017) to deny a planned unit development amendment that would have allowed chickens, geese and ducks on a rural residential lot within the PUD.

Michael Kowalczyk, of 43W580 Willow Creek Drive in Blackberry Township, had requested an amendment to the PUD to allow fowl on the property located on the northeast corner of Brundige and Keslinger Roads. The amendment would have allowed up to 16 chickens, five geese and two ducks.

Neighbors and adjacent property owners objected to the change, saying the allowance of fowl or livestock was not in keeping with the intent of the original PUD. Kowalczyk and his wife, Stacey, argued that the fowl were part of a sustainable lifestyle and was appropriate to the rural area and the original use of the home, described as a farmhouse dating back to the late 1800s.

Voting against the motion to deny were County Board members Don Ishmael, Myrna Molina and Jarett Sanchez.
