Algonquin Hits ‘Major Flood’ Stage; Multiple Rounds of Storms Coming
The Algonquin Tailwater has hit major flood stage, and there’s a possibility it could get worse, as multiple rounds of thunderstorms are possible later this week.
The National Weather Service Chicago on Tuesday reports that thunderstorms are possible over northern Illinois during mid and late week, with the return of a more
humid air mass providing potential for storms to produce heavy rainfall.
“While there is a high uncertainty in placement of storms within the region, there is some signal that along and north of Interstate 88 in northern Illinois and into Wisconsin may be the most favored,” the weather service says. “Given wet antecedent conditions over the Des Plaines, Fox River, and north branch of the Chicago River basins, this portion of far northeast Illinois is more susceptible to flooding than normal if multiple rounds of heavy rainfall were to pan out.”
Don Bryant, director of the Kane County Office of Emergency Management, said Tuesday that the Fox River remains closed to recreational watercraft.

As the Fox River, at the Algonquin Tailwater, appears to have crested the first step in the disaster recovery process is to conduct an Initial Damage Assessment.
Should a local resident or business wish to report their damage directly to the county, they can do so online by going to this page and filling out the form.
What’s Ahead
Those with hydrologic concerns hould maintain a close watch on the rainfall and river stage forecasts which will become gradually more refined with time.
Thunderstorms are possible late this evening (Tuesday, July 18, 2017) into overnight, mainly north of Interstate 80.
Flooding will continue along portions of the Fox and Des Plaines rivers. As of this morning, the Fox River at Montgomery was at the minor flood stage, and the Algonquin Tailwater was at major flood stage.
Excessive heat is in the forecast, as well.
