• KCAC’s Adorable, Adoptable Pet of the Week is written by Tecla Metzel of Kane County Animal Control.

What’s going on with all the chirps, whistles, squawks and tweets recently heard coming from KCAC? Is it the staff rooting for their favorite team or the latest Angry Birds movie? Neither, because it’s Kiwi, a muted-blue Quaker parrot that happens to be up for adoption.

It must have been fate the day our KCAC warden found little Kiwi at her feet. Her instinct told her this little bird was in trouble and needed to find a warm place to begin his climb back to health. Within a day of bringing Kiwi back to KCAC’s shelter, his feathers began to grow back. He began to preen and tell anyone who would listen his story in gurgles, tweets and coos.

Kiwi is extremely social, happiest when there are people in the room he can regale with his vocal acrobatics. Or, play a little Latin music, and Kiwi will show you his dance moves, bobbing along to the beat. When the music has subsided, he becomes extremely content playing pirate on someone’s shoulder.

If you want your home filled with the sweet stylings of a lovable and handsome feathered friend, then perhaps Kiwi will fit the bill.

KCAC Updates

Congratulations to Yeti, the sweet Himalayan feline found as a stray. Yeti found his forever home and is happily contemplating his future with his new siblings.

Mickey, a mini-schnauzer found as a stray, met his new owner, and it was love at first sight for both of them. After all the tears were shed and the hugs were hugged for the moment, Mickey trotted off to his new home with nary a glance backwards. Congratulations, Mickey!

How to Adopt

All Kane County Animal Control adoptable cats and dogs are spayed/neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on all vaccines, including rabies. They are tested for feline leukemia/FIV and heartworm.

The usual adoption fee is $200 for dogs and $100 for cats. Adoption of two dogs is $300, and adoption of two cats is $150.

About Kane County Animal Control

It is the duty of the Animal Control Department to:

• Ensure that all domesticated dogs and cats over 4 months of age are vaccinated against rabies and have a Kane County rabies tag.
• Ensure that all reported animal bites are given precautionary attention in relation to the possibility rabies infection.
• Ensure that pet owners are instructed on proper procedures pertaining to animal bites and enforce adherence to these procedures.
• Contain loose\stray dogs in unincorporated Kane County and those towns and villages with whom contracted.
• Investigate nuisance dog complaints in unincorporated Kane County and those towns and villages with whom contracted.
• Investigate complaints of neglected and\or abused dogs.
