Top 10 KCC Stories of 2017 — No. 2: Counterfeit Eclipse Glasses

  • Editor’s Note: This is the ninth in a series counting down the top 10 Kane County Connects stories of 2017.

In the three years Kane County Connects has been around, we’ve learned that there are really two elements that affect how many page views a story will get: timeliness and impact.

This story — citing reliable government information about the safety of eclipse glasses — hit the sweet spot with readers because the eclipse event was what everyone was talking about that week and because it was information Kane County residents needed and wanted.

In “totality,” it garnered 15,753 page views.

No. 2: How To Tell If Your Eclipse Glasses Are Safe

Just prior to the Aug. 21 solar eclipse, the marketplace was being flooded by counterfeit eclipse glasses that were labeled as if they’re ISO-compliant when in fact they were not.

Experts suggest that people make sure to get eclipse viewers from one of the suppliers listed on the Reputable Vendors of Solar Filters & Viewers page.

The Illinois Department of Public Health recommended this site as a resource. All we did was pass along the information from the IDPH, NASA and the American Astronomical Society.

That “news you can use” info included a list of reputable solar-viewer brands, a list of reputable vendors still selling (or giving away) solar-viewing glasses at that time and a list of retailers that were selling reputable solar glasses.

The eclipse itself was, by the way, spectacular.

So you might want to bookmark this “top 10” article … because another total solar eclipse will be visible in the United States on April 8, 2024.
