Primary Primer UPDATE: Countywide and County Board Contested Races

This article is part of a series pointing out the candidate names and referendums that will appear on the ballot. Early voting for the March 20 primary election in Kane County starts today (Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018), so it’s time to get familiar with the contested races in which you’ll have to make a decision.
A lot of folks think, “Ho hum, the primary.” But there are a number of important offices on the ballot — including state of Illinois contested races for governor and attorney general, “midterm” elections for U.S. congressional seats — plus at least 14 referendums on Kane County ballots.
The following is a rundown of contested races on the primary ballot. There are three County Board incumbents who are not seeking re-election: Thomas (T.R.) Smith in District 9, Rebecca Gillam in District 21 and Maggie Auger in District 23. Odd-numbered districts have elections coming up in 2018.
Republican Primary Ballot
In the Republican primary, there are two contested races for countywide elected offices and four contested races for County Board seats.
For county clerk, Stanton J. “Stan” Bond challenges incumbent John A. “Jack” Cunningham. For county sheriff, incumbent Donald E. Kramer faces off against Kevin Tindall.
The County Board contested races are in districts 9, 13, 15 and 23.
- In District 9, vying for the Republican nomination in the March 20 primary are Tom Koppie and Connie Von Keudell.
- In District 13, Steve Weber is challenging incumbent Philip Lewis/
- In District 15, incumbent Barbara Wojnicki faces a challenge for the Republican nomination from Austin P. Lawler.
- In District 23, the Republican candidates in the primary are Jim Patrician and Jonathan E. Radke.
Democratic Primary Ballot
In the Democratic primary, the only contested countywide office is for Kane County sheriff, where Ron Hain and Willie M. Mayes, Sr. are seeking their party’s nomination.
There are six contested Democratic primary races for positions on the County Board.
- In District 1, incumbent Myrna Molina faces Blanca E. Rodriguez.
- In District 3, Anita Marie Lewis challenges incumbent Donald Ishmael.
- In District 7, Brian Gravenhorst faces off against incumbent Monica Silva.
- In District 15, Gerald M. Palmere and Lucas Strom are competing for their party’s nomination.
- In District 17, Janice Bennett faces incumbent Deborah Allan.
- In District 19, there are three candidates on the Democratic primary ballot: Thomas P. Gibbons, John Jack Shales, Mohammad “Mo” Iqbal
