8 Amazing Earth Day Weekend Events
Kane County strives to make every day Earth Day. That starts with the exciting events taking place on Earth Day weekend to inspire and educate us! Take a look at what is going on and choose an event to attend this weekend.
Saturday, April 21
City of Elgin Earth Day at Hawthorne Hill
The city of Elgin will host its fifth annual Earth Day Celebration from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at Hawthorne Hill Nature Center, located at 28 Brookside Drive in Elgin. People of all ages are invited to attend this free, family-friendly event and learn about ways to protect the planet.
Local organizations will be available to provide information on storm water management, local food production, native plants, stream and river health, renewable energy, and other sustainability-related interests. The event will also feature face painting, nature play, a photo booth, healthy snacks, nature-themed crafts, seed planting and more.
Live entertainment outdoors on the back patio of the nature center includes:
- Plaza Folk Union: noon to 2 p.m.
- Make It A Double: 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Geneva Events at Peck Farm Park
The city of Geneva’s Natural Resource Committee and Geneva Park District will host Earth Day events from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Peck Farm Park, located at 4028 Kaneville Road in Geneva.
Events will include children’s activities and games, a farmers’ market, bicycle tune-ups, free paper shredding (sponsored by Kane County Teachers Credit Union), health screenings, chair massages, and the opportunity to purchase rain barrels. Admission is free.

Plant Trees With the Forest Preserve
Forest Preserve tree planting in celebration of Earth Day.
Help Celebrate Earth Day by planting trees with the Forest Preserve District of Kane County at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 21, at Camp Tomo Chi-Chi Knolls, located at 40W095 Freeman Road in Gilberts. All are welcome.
Hundreds of trees will be planted in a few hours. Holes will be pre-dug; volunteers will simply plant the tree, tamp down dirt, add water and mulch. It’s easy!
Be sure to arrive promptly at 10 a.m. Planting will continue until all trees are in the ground or until 1 p.m. — whichever comes first!
Groups of 10 or more, please contact our volunteer coordinator at 630-762-2741 or volunteer@kaneforest.com to register. Groups of less than 10 do not need to RSVP.

West Dundee’s annual Earth Day beautification event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 21.
Help prepare the Main Street planter boxes for this year’s growing season.

Woodland Wild Flower Walk
Tour the Harley Pond and Woods Restoration at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 21, at the Garfield Farm Museum in Campton Hills.
With the late onset of spring, the first evidence of the spring bloom should be begun as the chorus frogs sing in the vernal pool.

Sunday, April 22 – Earth Day!
Earth Day Open House
The Forest Preserve District of Kane County will hold an Earth Day Open House on Sunday, April 22, at Creek Bend Nature Center within LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, located at 37W700 Dean St. in St. Charles. Activities include the following:
Garfield Park, Harley Pond and Woods
- 8 a.m. Bird Walk — Learn how to spot birds on this guided walk
- 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Earth Day Garden Workshop — Create a garden-in-a-pot while learning the stories of herbs, blowers and vegetables
- 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Native Landscaping 101 — Trish Beckjord of The Conservation Foundation will introduce you to gardening with native plants, from a small scale garden with just a few native plants to using native plants in your overall landscaping.
- 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Earth Day Nature Hike and Trail Clean-up — Explore the spring woods along Ferson Creek during this guided hike with a naturalist.
8th Annual 5k Walk/Run for Water
Run for water with proceeds benefiting the Alliance for the Great Lakes at 8 a.m. Sunday, April 22, at the Spa Bleu West Dundee.

Run through a spring time morning surrounded by trees from around the world at 8 a.m. April 22, 2018, at The Morton Arboretum’s Visitor Center area in Lisle.
