• Editor’s Note: We sent Kane County Connects intern Allison Arguezo to the Kane County Fair to experience it for the first time. Here are her observations on Day 1, with more to come.

This is Allison, Kane County Connects intern, reporting from the Kane County Fair.

Wednesday was my first visit to the fair, and I’ve got to say, wow. Who knew?

The first thing I noticed — and the first thing you’ll probably notice when you go to the fair — is the animals. They are absolutely fascinating and a must-see for any fairgoer.

The Kane County 4-H exhibits are awesome — sheep, rabbits, pigs, poultry and cows. There is such an amazing amount of diversity of the animals, even within one building.

For each animal displayed, there’s a sign that tells their name and breed. In the poultry building, I was able to see six different breeds of chicken: Ameraucana, Rhode Island Red, Plymouth Rock Barred, Buckeye, Silkie Bantam, and Silver Laced Wyandotte.

I can say that the Silkie Bantam is my favorite — the chicken looks so fluffy — you just have to go and see it for yourself! In each building, there’s a poster board giving information about the animals themselves, such as fun facts and benefits it has to humans.

Speaking of exhibits, I was able to take a look at the 4-H projects exhibits, where you can see an array of crafts created by 4-H exhibitors throughout Kane County.

Categories of exhibits in the hall range from photography and clothing to mechanical sciences and even baking. Several of the exhibits have won awards and ribbons, and they are showcased on the piece.

The 4-H exhibit hall will be open on all days of the fair at various times. It will be open from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, from noon to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Rides Are A Must

Another thing that caught my eye was the multitude of rides at the fair. Some were targeted at younger children but there were also rides that were suitable for older kids and teens.

On Friday and Saturday, for $20, you can get unlimited carnival rides from noon to 5 p.m.

Some rides for the younger kid that looked fun were the Super Truck and the Kite Flyer. The zipper and pharaoh’s fury were rides that seem to attract more teens than young kids.

Even so, there are tons of rides that can be enjoyed by both audiences. Ferris wheels have always been my favorite and they are both loved by kids and adults. And on the Ferris wheel, you get a great view of the whole fair!

The Krazy Kabin is another example of an attraction that would be great for both young and old. When I was looking at it from the outside, I could see many adults and children entering in and out of the house. That tells me that the Krazy Kabin must be really popular!

Other Fun Stuff

For adults, something good to note for this year is the new wine tasting event in the Prairie Events Center. Also inside the Prairie Events Center are several exhibits ranging from horticulture to home economics to commercial exhibits.

The best part is that these attractions will be here all week.

I couldn’t stay too late at the fair Wednesday, but I hope to stay from opening to closing sometime this week. Stop by Kane County Connects again tomorrow when I cover Day 2 of the fair. Today (Thursday, July 19) is the official fair day for the Kane County Fair.
