OK, why should you care about who’s on the local library board?

Well, here are just a few reasons.

Probably the first and foremost for some folks is that the library district generally accounts for about 3.3 percent of your property tax bill. If you care about fiscal responsibility or want to make sure you’re getting the best value for your tax dollar, it’s worth your time and attention to vote.

Second, the local library is one of your community’s great assets. Making sure you’ve got quality facilities, materials and services should be important to you as a consumer.

Third, libraries are changing. Technology has greatly affected the way we consume materials for reading or viewing, how we gather them, distribute them and use them. Decisions that are made now are pivotal and historic.

So, in addition to paying attention and making an informed decision on your April 2 ballot, consider running for a library board seat in the future. It’s a great way to give back to the community, or to get your feet wet in local politics.
