Treasurer’s Office Will Collect $1.3B in Property Taxes — ‘Average Tax Bill’ Up 1.29%

  • Editor’s Note: This is the second in a series of articles on Kane County Connects regarding the 2018 property tax bill payable in 2019. Tax bills are available right now on the Kane County Treasurer’s Office website and will be sent out to Kane County residents by May 1, 2019. Subsequent articles will look at the top 10 Kane County taxpayers, plus an estimate of the average property tax bill by township.

Kane County will collect more than $1.3 billion in property taxes this year.

That’s a staggering amount of money, of course, and it’s on the rise.

The “average tax bill” for a Kane County resident is $6,780.21 this year, according to statistics provided by the Kane County Treasurer’s Office. That’s a 1.29 percent increase over last year’s average tax bill.

Of course, most of your property tax money goes to local public schools. In most years, about 68 percent or more of your property tax payments are going to local education.

The second-biggest slice of the property tax pie goes to municipal governments — cities or villages in Kane County — and that accounts for more than 10 percent of your property tax bill. Third place generally goes to the Forest Preserve District of Kane County, and Kane County government is fourth.

Average Tax Bill

The average tax bill is calculated by taking the total amount of the real estate tax collection and dividing it by the total number of parcels in the county. It is not a figure representing the average home owner’s property tax bill.

The 1.29 percent increase in the average tax bill is the highest since the tax bills payable in 2015. That year, the year-over-year increase was a whopping 4.55 percent.

This year’s increase is higher than last year’s but not out of wack in comparison to most years.

As you can see by the chart below, the percentage increase was .77 percent for taxes payable in 2019, 1.01 percent for taxes payable in 2017 and .81 percent for taxes payable in 2016.
