If you wonder what the nocturnal world of our forest preserves looks like, come explore it with us during our Nighttime Nature Series!

Join naturalists from the Forest Preserve District of Kane County for these after-hours programs. Each month we’ll visit a different forest preserve to learn about various nocturnal habits.

In July, join naturalists for “Firefly Fireworks” from 8:15 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at Campton Forest Preserve, located at 4N379 Town Hall Road, St. Charles.

Discover how and why fireflies produce their eerie light. As darkness falls, we’ll watch the woods and prairie light up with thousands of flashing fireflies. Don’t miss nature’s dazzling displays!

In August, join “Bat Watch”! The event takes place from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, at Burnidge Forest Preserve, located at 38W235 Big Timber Road, Elgin.

The fun starts at dusk if you’re an insectivorous bat — or if you’re someone who likes to watch them! You’ll watch bats as they leave their daytime roosts and fly into the woods for the night and play bat games while learning about bat ecology.
