A former Geneva doctor has been convicted for sexually assaulting a woman he knew in 2012.

A Kane County jury on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2019, found 60-year-old Mark G.P. Lewis guilty of the offense of criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 felony.

The jurors deliberated for less than an hour before reaching the verdict.

Kane County Assistant State’s Attorneys Greg Sams and Julianne Gerding presented evidence during the trial that on Nov. 17, 2012, Lewis sexually assaulted the victim when she was unable to consent.

The crime took place at his home on Squire Lane in St. Charles. Lewis knew the victim.

Kane County Circuit Judge John A. Barsanti set Lewis’ next court appearance for 9 a.m. Oct. 13, 2019, in Courtroom 319 at the Kane County Judicial Center for motions and to set a sentencing date.

Lewis faces a minimum sentence of four years’ imprisonment in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Lewis remains in custody at the Kane County jail.

A judge in March 2018 sentenced Lewis to eight years in prison for his conviction for the offenses of unlawful possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, Class X felony, and unlawful possession of a firearm without a Firearm Owners Identification Card, Class 3 felony.

Authorities in 2015 found 110 marijuana plants, more than 11,000 grams of processed marijuana, a handgun and ammunition at Lewis’ St. Charles residence. Lewis’ FOID card had been revoked.

Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon thanked the jurors for their thoughtful consideration of the facts, ASAs Sams and Gerding and the St. Charles Police Department for their hard work in the case.

“Mark Lewis is a disgusting predator who used his position and education to prey on this woman. I’m proud of her for the courage she showed in coming to court to face her attacker and tell her story. Sexual assault is a violent crime, and I’m pleased that we have been able to give her a measure of justice.”
