Kane County Animal Control Is Solar Powered! Ribbon Cutting Set For Nov. 26

Kane County Animal Control is celebrating its status as the first county building to use solar energy with a solar panel ribbon-cutting ceremony set for 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, at the facility at 4060 Keslinger Road in Geneva.
Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen will provide remarks, along with Kane County Health Department Executive Director Barb Jeffers, Kane County Public Health Committee Chair Anita Lewis and Kane County Animal Control Administrator Brett Youngsteadt.
The panels provide the Animal Control building with nearly all of its energy needs.
County officials said the first two months with the panels have shown a $0 bill from the electricity company. Kane County Animal Control has a 25-year lease with the solar company, WCP Solar of Naperville, with monthly costs far less than the average electricity bill.
WCP Solar secured grants and credits to reduce the monthly lease cost. Cost savings will go back into the shelter’s budget and directly benefit the animals.
Converting county buildings to solar power has been a goal of the Kane County Board for many years.
“Kane County is committed to using clean energy and renewable resources,” officials said. “No greenhouse gas emissions are released into the atmosphere when solar panels are used to create electricity.”
The building has grid back up for nights and days with little to no sun light.

About Kane County Animal Control
It is the duty of the Animal Control Department to:
- Ensure that all domesticated dogs and cats over 4 months of age are vaccinated against rabies and have a Kane County rabies tag.
- Ensure that all reported animal bites are given precautionary attention in relation to the possibility rabies infection.
- Ensure that pet owners are instructed on proper procedures pertaining to animal bites and enforce adherence to these procedures.
- Contain loose\stray dogs in unincorporated Kane County and those towns and villages with whom contracted.
- Investigate nuisance dog complaints in unincorporated Kane County and those towns and villages with whom contracted.
