Prescription Drugs Drop-Off to Be Available at Coroner’s Office

Kane County Coroner Rob Russell announced this week that the Coroner’s Office will be a Drug Enforcement Administration collection site for disposal of prescription drugs.
Many people who no longer need prescription drugs are unaware of an outlet to get rid of them properly, Russell said, adding that proper prescription drug disposal is important because studies have shown that prescription drug abuse promotes heroin use and addiction. Many prescriptions, such as painkillers, frequently have been stolen from medicine cabinets of homes in Kane County. Due to the increase in prescription drugs prices in the local area to tackle addiction.
“There are some DEA prescription drop-off points in the county, but my goal is to promote this program heavily and get as many sites as possible in the county. We will take any medication from anywhere in the county,” Russell said.
The Coroner’s Office will accept prescription drugs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The office is located at 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva.
The office will be participating in the National Drug Take Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 26.
It also will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 3 for tours of the office and morgue. The tour will be age-appropriate and sensitive to all who enter. The office will be accepting unwanted prescription drug on that day, as well.
