Tuesday Meeting Takes Hard Look at Coal Power, Costs

Members of the local Sierra Club will meet Tuesday to discuss a coal-fueled energy contract between Prairie State Energy and various Kane County municipalities, including the city of Batavia.

The community meeting for Coal Contract Transparency is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, at Unitarian Universalist Church, 102 S. Second St., Geneva.

The city of Batavia held a public hearing in February to explain rate increases associated with the purchase of Prairie State power. At that time, the city was proposing a 16 percent electric rate increase, or raising the sales tax a half percent and electric rates 10 percent. 

Several communities, including Geneva, use Prairie State power.
