2 Public Hearings Will Explain Electric Aggregation Plan, Rates and Service

Like a good novel, what’s most interesting about Kane County’s Electric Aggregation plan is “What happens next?”

On March 18, voters approved a referendum that grants the county authority to negotiate electric rates for citizens who live in unincorporated areas.

Now, two public hearings have been set to explain the policies and procedures Kane County hopes to put in place, including those that relate to rates and customer service. The first will be held at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, in the Kane County Board Room, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva. The second will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, at Fishermen’s Inn, 43W901 Main Street Road in Elburn.

The plan includes information on member education, opt-out procedures, billing, obligations of an  electric supplier solicitation of bids, changes and termination of service and selection of an electric supplier.

Kane County has been purchasing its power (for various county-owned buildings) from suppliers other than ComEd since 2006. The 2014 electrical bidding process netted a potential electrical savings of over $193,000 from 2013 electrical costs for county taxpayers, according to a letter to referendum voters from Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen and Kane County Energy & Environmental Committee Chairman Kurt Kojzarek.

The county hopes those kinds of savings can be passed along to rural customers under this plan.

Kane County Environmental & Water Resources Director Ken Anderson says he hopes the hearings will provide a lot of good-quality information on the electric aggregation program.

A copy of the proposed plan is available for inspection during normal business hours at the Kane County Clerk’s Office, which is in Building B on the government center campus.
