Bail has been set at $1 million for the man accused of fleeing police, driving under the influence and causing the May 27 crash in Elgin that killed a 35-year-old Carpentersville man.

Steven T. Luellen, of the 300 block of Jefferson Street in Elgin, has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence during an accident that causes death, homicide, driving while license revoked and operating an uninsured motor vehicle causing bodily harm.

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office said the $1 million bail was set Monday, June 2. Luellen’s next court appearance is set for 9 a.m. Friday, June 13, in Courtroom 319 at the Kane County Judicial Center in front of Circuit Judge John Barsanti.

Luellen was taken from St. Alexius to the Kane County Jail, The Courier-News reports.

Prosecutors say Luellen was under the influence of a combination of alcohol, cocaine, marijuana and benzodiazepines, according to a report in the Daily Herald.

The crash that happened around 5:08 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, at Liberty and Jefferson streets took the life of 35-year-old Miguel A. Agustin-Tellez of Carpentersville. A passenger in Luellen’s vehicle, 35-year-old Josette Jarvis of  Elgin, was taken to Advocate Sherman in critical condition but “is expected to survive,” according to media reports.

Police told media sources that Luellen was wanted on a parole violation for a prior conviction of aggravated fleeing and eluding police. The Daily Herald said Luellen had “a lengthy criminal record” and ” four stints in prison.”

Crash investigators said Luellen’s 2011 Nissan Maxima was eastbound on Jefferson Street at a high rate of speed when it went through the stop sign at Liberty (Route 25) and struck Agustin-Tellez’ 2002 Mazda MPV travelling north on Liberty. The MPV struck a house at the northeast corner of Liberty and Jefferson, according to The Courier article.
