UPDATE: Airlifted Driver in Critical Condition After Motorcycles Crash on Route 64 Near Meredith Road
The Kane County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a late-afternoon Wednesday motorcycle crash on Route 64 just west of Meredith Road in the village of Virgil.
The crash involved two motorcycles at around 5:10 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2014. One driver was airlifted from the scene with potential life-threatening injuries and the other was treated and released.
The initial investigation indicates that the two motorcycles were traveling west on Route 64, side by side with one motorcycle slightly in front of the other, according to a press release from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.
The front motorcycle, a 1992 Harley Davidson driven by Steven Wenger, 50, of North Aurora, began to turn into a business on the south side of Route 64, cutting in front of the second motorcycle, a 2014 Harley Davidson driven by Timothy Corbitt, 55, of Elburn.
Corbitt’s Harley collided with Wenger’s, the press release said, and Corbitt was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
Wenger was airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove by Superior Air Ambulance with potential life-threatening injuries. A report in the Kane County Chronicle and other media said Friday that Wenger remains in critical condition.
Corbitt was treated and released at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by sheriff’s detectives and members of the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team.
It is unknown if drugs or alcohol played a role in this crash, the release said. Neither person was wearing a helmet. Route 64 was closed between Peplow Road and Meredith Road while the crash was investigated.
