The Kane County Farm Bureau Foundation is giving you a chance to turn a fun night out of the house and a great meal into something that will make your community safer.

The public is invited to a Pig Roast at Kane County Farm Bureau from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 27,  in St. Charles. Attend this farm safety fundraiser to help the KCFB Foundation raise funds to assist in the purchase of a grain rescue tube for fire protection districts in Northern Kane County, including Pingree Grove, Burlington and Hampshire.

Suffocation from engulfment is a leading cause of death in grain bins, and the number of these deaths continues to rise. The number of deaths more than doubled nationwide between 2006 and 2010. Educating people about the dangers of entering grain bins while an auger is operating is important, but it’s also crucial that first responders have equipment like a grain rescue tube to make the most of precious minutes they have to keep someone from being totally engulfed.

During a rescue, a grain rescue tube is placed around the victim to create a barrier between them and the grain. The grain is then vacuumed or scooped out allowing the victim to be pulled to safety.

“It’s not an overstatement to say that proceeds from this community fundraiser will save lives,” said KCFB President Joe White. “We know what an important piece of equipment this is for local fire departments and we wanted to provide a way for surrounding communities to help improve public safety, for themselves and their neighbors.”

The event is open to the public and promises to be a great way to spend a June evening. Double D Pig Roasts of Frankfurt, Ill. will serve up delicious barbeque pork and all the fixin’s, rain or shine. Plus, games, fire truck tours and Cabela’s BUCKS and refreshments.
