UPDATE: Hot-Air Balloon Comes Down in Sun City, Second Huntley Balloon Incident in 5 Days
A hot-air balloon crashed around 7:26 a.m. Tuesday onto a neighborhood street in Huntley. No one was hurt, but a renewed focus on ballooncraft safety follows in the wake of the crash, which is the second in five days in that area.
According to a report in the Courier-News, CBS Local, NBC 5 and other sources, the balloon crash-landed at Windy Prairie Drive and Songbird Lane. The pilot decided to land the balloon after heavy winds blew the balloon near power lines.
Huntley Police Deputy Chief Michael Klunk told media sources that there were three passengers on board in addition to the pilot.
On Friday, a 93-year-old woman was injured after the hot-air balloon she was riding in got swept by a wind gust and was dragged across Pinecrest Golf Course, 11220 Algonquin Road, Huntley, according to an article in the Daily Herald.
The balloon was dragged across the 18th green and damaged the course. The Cary woman was treated at Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, and her injuries were not life-threatening, the Daily Herald reported.
The balloon in Tuesday’s crash was operated by Sky Soaring in Hampshire. The balloon in Friday’s crash was operated by International Balloon Management, according to reports.
- EDITOR’S NOTE: In a followup story in the Daily Herald, the pilot says he intended to land the balloon in the intersection, and it was not a crash landing.
