An article in Monday’s Daily Herald sheds some light on a question we’ve been asked a few times in the past couple weeks:

“We have noticed a substantial increase of low flying commercial jets over the area since O’Hare opened their new runway. Could you check on that?”

According to the Daily Herald, people throughout the western suburbs have noticed the increase in air traffic and nose.  The runway opened in October, but now that the weather is warm, more people seem to be complaining about the noise and the intrusion to residents’ quality of life.

So much so, in fact, that several legislators have raised their voices, the Daily Herald reports.

U.S. Reps. Mike Quigley, Tammy Duckworth and Jan Schakowsky are urging the FAA to redo its environmental impact study of O’Hare modernization, which is a big deal. Such action would give additional “vigorous” citizen input, but it also would “stop work for a painfully long time,” according an an expert interviewed by Daily Herald reporter Marni Pyke.

What do you think?
