Aurora Man Is Third Convicted in April Gang Shooting

Darby Korleone, gang member

An Aurora man is the third person to been sentenced to prison for his role in a spring 2013 gang-motivated shooting that injured an Aurora youth.

Korleone L. Darby, 20, of the 400 block of Grant Place, Aurora, on July 10, 2014, agreed to a sentence of 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections in exchange for a guilty plea to aggravated battery, a Class X felony.

Circuit Judge Susan Clancy Boles accepted the plea.

At about 5 p.m. April 15, 2013, Darby, co-defendant Ryan N. Fingers, 16, of the 500 block of North Root Street, Aurora, and a 14-year-old juvenile were riding bicycles in the 600 block of Woodlawn Avenue, Aurora, after they had obtained a handgun from a fellow gang member. A short while later, the three, acting together, confronted the 16-year-old victim near his home, believing that he was a member of a rival gang. After exchanging words, six shots were fired from the handgun at the victim. The trio immediately fled. They were taken into custody by Aurora police within minutes. The victim was struck in the leg with three bullets, but the wounds were not life threatening.

On June 26, 2014, Fingers pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated battery with a firearm and was sentenced to 18 years in prison. Fingers’ case was transferred to adult court because of the severity of the charges and his age.

The juvenile, now 15, previously pleaded guilty in juvenile court to aggravated battery with a firearm.

“Guns and gangs are a ticket to nowhere. I hope these prison sentences make other young people think twice about joining street gangs,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said.

The case was prosecuted by Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Joseph Cullen.
