Carob Powder Product Recall Continues to Expand
More products that use carob powder as an ingredient are being voluntarily recalled because the ingredient may be contaminated with salmonella. The latest company to be affected are the TJX Companies, Inc., which is recalling “ecoato” Sweet Paprika Powder products.
No illnesses related to this recall have been reported but the products were widely distributed, including in Illinois.
Other firms affected so far by the recall include Earth Circle Organics, of Grass Valley, CA, and Dancing Star LLC, of Buckland, MA. A full list of products that use the carob powder related to the recall as reported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration can be found by clicking here.
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infection (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
