A Geneva doctor who recently lived in St. Charles faces criminal charges for sexually assaulting a woman he knew.

Dr. Mark G. Lewis, 55, most recently of the 2100 block of Blackberry Drive, Geneva, and previously of the 0-99 block of Squire Lane, St. Charles, has been charged with one count each of aggravated criminal sexual assault, a Class X felony, and criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 felony.

St. Charles police and Kane County prosecutors allege that on Nov. 17, 2012, Lewis sexually assaulted the victim at his former home in the 0-99 block of Squire Lane, St. Charles.

The charges were authorized July 8, 2014, by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, and a warrant for Lewis’ arrest was issued. In the warrant, bail was set at $250,000. Lewis was taken into custody around noon July 8 by St. Charles police at his Geneva practice.

Lewis appeared late this afternoon (Tuesday, July 8, 2014) in Kane County Bond Court. Lewis was told that if he posts the $25,000 bond, he is to have no contact with the victim, he is to refrain from consuming alcohol and he is to surrender his passport.

Lewis’ next court appearance is set for 9 a.m. July 25, 2014, in Courtroom 319 at the Kane County Judicial Center in front of Circuit Judge John A. Barsanti.

If convicted of the most serious charge, Lewis would be sentenced to between six and 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

The charges against Lewis are not proof of guilt. Lewis is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the state’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
