MACROBARS Added to Growing List of Recalled Products Containing Carob Powder
More products using carob powder as an ingredient are being voluntarily recalled because the ingredient may be contaminated with salmonella. GoMacro, of Viola, Wis., is recalling MACROBARS brand almond butter + carob and sunflower butter + chocolate because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.
Despite the widespread recall, no illnesses related to it have been reported, but the products were widely distributed, including in Illinois.
Other firms affected so far by the recall include TJX Companies, Inc., of Framington Ma., Earth Circle Organics, of Grass Valley, CA, and Dancing Star LLC, of Buckland, MA. Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infection (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
