Washed Out Culvert Swallows Vehicle, Causes Pickup to Drive on Top of It at 3:50 AM in Rural Kane County
A 10-foot-wide hole apparently caused by overnight storms trapped two occupants of a Ford Taurus on Thomas Road near Burlington, causing a pickup truck to drive over it and sending two a woman and her son to the hospital in a bizarre incident early Tuesday morning.
According to a report from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, sheriff’s deputies were dispatched at about 3:50 a.m. to the area of Thomas Road and McDonald Road for a report of Ford Taurus that had driven into a part of the roadway that had been washed out. The Taurus reportedly was engulfed by the hole and was “completely underground.”
The two occupants — the driver, Juanita Pineda, 41, and her son, Benjamin Hernandez, 15, of Elgin — were trapped inside the vehicle.
Prior to deputies’ arrival, a second vehicle — a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Irvin Morero, 25, of Elgin, had driven over the first vehicle, the report said. Deputies located the vehicles on Thomas Road approximately a quarter mile north of McDonald Road. Fire personnel had to extricate the two people form the Taurus.
Pineda and Hernandez were transported to Kishwaukee Hospital in Sycamore with apparent non-life threatening injuries. Moreno was treated and released at the scene.
This is a rural area and there are no streetlights. “It is unknown exactly why that section of roadway was washed out; however, it appears to have been related to the overnight storms,” the report said.
The hole was approximately 10 feet in diameter and deep enough that the Taurus was below ground level, the report said.
Thomas Road between Middleton Road and McDonald Road will be closed indefinitely due to the damage to the roadway. No tickets were issues as a result of this crash.
Editor’s Note: A previous version of this article describes the hole as a “sinkhole.” A “washed out culvert” probably is more accurate.

It wasn’t a sinkhole, the whole road was washed out by the creek underneath.
