2 Illinois Students Will Win $5,000 Scholarship, ‘Intensive’ D.C. Experience

Participation in the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) and a $5,000 scholarship on behalf of The William Randolph Hearst Foundation will be awarded to two students of junior or senior status in high school in Illinois.

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) is encouraging students to apply for the 53rd annual intensive weeklong education experience in Washington D.C. It will take place in March 7-14, 2015, otherwise known as “Washington Week”.

According to ISBE, “The mission of the United States Senate Youth Program is to provide a yearly opportunity for selected students to gain an in-depth view of the Senate and the federal government overall as well as a deeper understanding of the interrelationship of the legislative, judicial and executive branches. The program provides a foundation of knowledge and encouragement for those considering a future of public service on the local, state or national level.”

Applications can be obtained from guidance counselors or by choosing the application link on the ISBE website, here. Choose the brochure link for a description of the program and associated rules. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 3, 2014.
