Kane County Veterans, Spouses Eligible for Burial in National Cemetery

The Kane County Veterans Assistance newsletter reports this week that veterans and their spouses who meet the National Cemetery Administration’s qualifications are eligible for burial at a nearby national cemetery.

The Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Joliet is the second largest national cemetery in the nation and is the closest national cemetery to Kane County. Established in October of 1999, it occupies part of the area that once was the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant.

Veterans can have their caskets placed in a in a burial vault below ground or placement of their urn in one of the national cemetery’s columbariums.

National Cemetery staff align headstones using Global Positioning Satellite technology so that the rows are maintained a perfectly straight lines.

The National Cemetery is open to the public during daylight hours and the office is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
