New Map App Can Help You Find Property Sales in Your Area
The second installment of property taxes are due on Sept. 2, which is right about the time folks start thinking about the assessed value of their homes. The only problem is, Sept. 2 will be too late for many property owners to file a complaint.
The window to file a complaint with the Board of Review, each year, is a 30-day period after your particular township’s assessments are published in a local newspaper. As of Tuesday, that window will still be open for the following townships:
- St Charles: Aug. 25
- Campton: Aug. 28
- Geneva: Aug.28
- Plato: Sept. 4
- Elgin: Sept. 4
- Aurora: Sept. 18
- Batavia: Sept. 18
- Burlington: Sept. 18
The Kane County Supervisor of Assessments Office website contains detailed “how to” information about filing a complaint. A list of links to various pages are below. Among the links is a relatively new sales search tool developed by Supervisor of Assessments Mark Armstrong along with the Kane County GIS Department.
Basically, that map shows sales information for properties in Kane County and is a way to find out sales prices in your neck of the woods. As part of the complaint process, a homeowner generally needs to show three similar, nearby property sales as part of the burden of proof that his or her home’s assessed value is out of kilter.
Sales Search
The 2014 Board of Review Sales Search Tool is designed to graphically display which Kane County parcels sold in 2011, 2012, or 2013 so that taxpayers and other practitioners can find the most appropriate sales when deciding whether or not to file an assessment complaint for the 2014 year.
