WEEKEND PICKS: 3 Fests (Bug, Shred and ‘i’), a Fundraiser and a Historical Moment
As is almost always the case, the weekend is full of fun at venues across Kane County. Here are just five (click on the links for more information):
1. Elgin’s iFest
Honestly, this sounds very cool. Elgin’s International Festival, also known as iFest, will bring together dozens of the world’s cultures which showcase the cultural throughout the Greater Fox Valley of Northern Illinois. The free festival will feature music and entertainment, ethnic cuisine, children’s activities, a “world market” and cultural arts and crafts.
2. Bug Fest
It’s a bug’s life, gone local. Insects and the fascinating world of bugs will take center stage from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, when the fifth annual Bug Fest is held at Lippold Park and Red Oak Nature Center. The free, family-friendly event will feature fun and educational activities with a swarm of bug-related activities, demonstrations and crafts.
3. Shred Fest
From 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 23, bring any paper documents you would like to have shredded—bank statements, old tax returns, anything — to First Community Bank, 165 S. Randall Road, Elgin, and the document destruction team will effectively dispose of them for you on-site. The limit is 150 pounds of paper.
4. Geneva History Museum Grand Re-Opening
OK, that’s maybe not the right headline.
The Geneva History Museum (formerly the Geneva History Center) has reinvented itself, and the new exhibit is something to see. We already gave you a sneak peek earlier in the week, but for the full effect, check out the array of family-friendly activities planned when the museum opens to the public Saturday, Aug. 23.
5. Maria Servan Benefit
Arthritis is an insidious condition, but it’s even worse when inflicted on the young. On Saturday, Kane County residents can do a little something to help one family that has had huge out-of-pocket expenses associated with juvenile arthritis. The Elgin American Legion is hosting a fundraiser to help Willard Elementary School student Maria Serban and her family cope with the expenses that have accompanied her pain.
