The city of Geneva reports that a 90-minute standoff between a 66-year-old Geneva man and officers from the Geneva Police and Kane County SWAT Team ended peacefully Wednesday afternoon.

At 10:37 a.m. Sept. 3, Geneva Police responded to a home in the 200 block of Syril Drive after the man’s wife said he may have been in danger after the couple became involved in a verbal argument. The woman told police when she left the residence, the man had a weapon in his possession, and she was fearful for his safety.

Geneva Police officers immediately responded to the area to set up a perimeter and attempted to make contact with the man inside his house. After confirming with area residents that shots had been heard, and that police were unable to make contact, the Kane County SWAT Team was requested to assist. Officers from both the City and County SWAT were able to contact the man and safely bring him into custody.

Upon investigation, officers learned the man had a handgun in his possession, and had discharged the weapon outside of his home after his wife’s departure but prior to Geneva Police arriving at the scene.

The man’s name is not being released since charges are pending through the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office. The man also received medical attention for medical reasons not related to this incident.

Williamsburg Elementary School, St. Peter School and Faith Lutheran School, along with neighbors, were informed by Geneva police to remain inside during the incident. Further information will be released as it becomes available, the city said.

“The Geneva Police Department would like to extend their appreciation to Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez, the Kane County SWAT Team, and the St. Charles Police Department for their assistance in bringing this incident to a safe conclusion,” the city said.
