Aurora Man Gets 16-Year Prison Sentence for Weapon, Drug Crimes

An Aurora man convicted in May of being in possession of drugs he planned to sell and firearms has been sent to prison.

Nelson A. Caceras, 25, of the 500 block of East New York Street, Aurora, was sentenced late Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014, to 16 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

On May 9, 2014, Caceras was convicted by Circuit Judge Susan Clancy Boles of armed violence, a Class X felony, possession of a firearm defaced of its identification marks, a Class 3 felony, and unlawful possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, a Class A misdemeanor.

At about 8 p.m. January 25, 2011, Aurora police served a warrant at Caceres’ residence. A search produced two handguns – a .357 Magnum and a defaced .25 caliber semiautomatic – 3.5 grams of cocaine and 3.5 grams of cannabis.

Caceras was immediately taken into custody and subsequently posted $2,500 bond. Sometime in early 2013, Caceras failed to appear in court and a warrant for his arrest was issued. In November 2013, Caceras was found in Puerto Rico and extradited back to Kane County.

According to Illinois law, Caceras is eligible for day-for-day credit. He receives credit for at least 354 days served in the Kane County jail.

The case was prosecuted by Kane County Assistant State’s Attorneys Mark D. Stajdohar and Vincent Coyle.
