Elgin, Northern Kane County Clean Up After Friday Storm

Elgin and other northern Kane County communities still are feeling the aftermath of Friday storms that rattled through the area and caused power outages to as many as 174,000 homes regionally.
The city of Elgin has announced a special brush pickup to assist with communitywide cleanup efforts.
According to the city of Elgin website, residents should place brush and tree limbs out with their regular garbage and recycling collection, and expect items to be picked up no later than the day following their regular collection day. For example, residents with garbage collection on Monday will receive brush and tree limb pick up by Tuesday, and those with collection on Friday will receive brush and tree limb collection by Saturday. Stickers are not required for this special pick up.
Brush and tree-limb collection will end on Saturday, Sept. 13.
The storm hit about 2:30 p.m. Friday, and Elgin’s police, fire and public services departments responded immediately to safety concerns and roadway obstructions, the Elgin website said.
“Safety is our number one concern, and we were fortunate to not have any injuries as a result of this storm,” City Manager Sean Stegall said on the city’s website. “We thank all of our residents for their patience as we work through the aftermath of this storm, together.”
Elgin received more than 800 calls to the city’s 311 Citizen Contact Center and the 911 Telecommunications Office. City of Elgin public services crews and city-hired contractors will clear main arterial roads of obstructions before moving to side streets. The city will remove fallen trees and obstruction from the public rights of way; residents are responsible for trees in a private back yard.
The Daily Herald reported that as many as 950 homes in the north and northwest suburbs were without power as late as Sunday afternoon, but power was expected to be up by Sunday night. ComEd’s Outage Map confirms that few homes are without power on Monday morning.
The Courier-News reported that 1,500 trees were felled or damaged in the Friday-afternoon storm, causing power outages for 7,900 residences in Elgin.
The weather is dry and pleasant to start the new week.
