FREE* Recycling, Document-Shredding Event Sept. 13
Kane County Recycles is hosting one of its big events of the season Saturday, an electronics, books and paint recycling and document-shredding event that draws as many as 1,000 recyclers from across Kane County.
With the exception of latex paint recycling, the event is free and takes place from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 13, at 540 S. Randall Road, St. Charles, IL 60174.
Kane County accepts electronics free of charge, including all kinds of televisions, computers and everything that connects to TVs or computers.
“Cell phones, video games, microwaves, household appliances, holiday lights — basically, we take anything with a plug on it except for large appliances,” Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Jarland said.
Volunteers and staff unload for you, and a contracted recycler, eWorks Electronics Recycling Services, destroys the data on your hard drive at their facility in Chicago — so you don’t have to.
Also accepted are books of any age or condition, both hardcover and paperback. Books are redistributed whenever possible and recycled if not. Pacesetter Books provides this service.
Latex paint is the only item that has a recycling fee per container, payable by the resident with cash or check. It is $1.50 per pint can and $2.50 per gallon can.
“Latex paint is non-toxic but difficult to dispose of because you have to dry it out before placing it in your landfill trash,” Jarland said. “However, at this event you can bring your liquid latex paint for recycling. It can be easily recycled into new products with no drying out necessary!”
Earth Paint Collection Systems will be collecting latex paint for recycling. No oil-based products will be accepted.
One of the most popular services is confidential document shredding. This service is for residential users only — no businesses should try to take advantage of this service.
Shred-it Document Destruction provides the service, with these parameters:
- The limit is 150 pounds of paper (about three to five file boxes).
- Staples, paper clips, rubber bands, spiral bindings, folders without metal, and cellophane envelope windows are fine.
- All binder clips must be removed. That includes three-ring plastic binders and any larger metal pieces.
- Do not bring periodicals, magazines and other paper, including junk mail that does not contain confidential information. “Those materials can go in your household recycling bin, and is not appropriate for this program,” Jarland said. “Names and addresses are not confidential. Account numbers, social security numbers, and birthdates are considered sensitive and confidential information.”
Kane County will NOT be collecting:
- Oil paint or other household hazardous waste.
- Large household appliances (washers, dryers, etc.)
- Freon containing appliances (refrigerators, air conditioners, etc.)
- Landfill garbage.
