More Than 1,000 Attend September Recycling Event
Give yourselves a round of applause, Kane County!
Thanks to you, 100,000 pounds of electronics — that’s 50 tons, enough to fill 4.5 semi-trailer trucks — were recycled at the Sept. 13 Kane County recycling event, along with 22,000 pounds of shredded documents, 740 cans of latex paint, 10,000 pounds of books and 475 pounds of cardboard boxes that had books or documents in them.
The event was attended by more than 1,000 residents. Eight hundred of you folks had electronics to recycle, 80 contributed latex paint for recycling and reuse, and 480 brought confidential documents for shredding. (People dropping off books were not counted separately.)
The grand total of materials collected is more than 200,000 pounds (100 tons) that will be kept from the landfill and will be reused or recycled.
Kane County Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Jarland said the event was a huge success by any measure, and part of that success resulted in one category of materials exceeding capacity.
“We apologize for any inconvenience caused to residents that arrived after 11:30 a.m. to find that the shred trucks were filled to bulging, and we could not receive or shred any more,” Jarland said in a press release. “In the future we will consider bringing in three trucks to resolve this issue.”
The next shred event will be Dec. 13, 2014.
Electronics and book recycling events are always from 8 a.m. to noon on the second Saturday of the month at 540 S. Randall Road in St. Charles.
