Veterans Assistance ‘One-Stop Shop’ Coming Sept. 30
Veterans looking for help finding their way through the maze of government services can find it Sept. 30 in a new “one-stop shop” event offered by a partnership of local veterans institutions.
Elgin Community College, in partnership with the Kane County Veterans Assistance Commission, Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs and Gail Borden Library, will host the 2014 Veterans and Families Resource Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, in the Events Center, Building J at Elgin Community College.
“This event aims to be a ‘One-Stop-Shop’ for veterans and their families bringing many veteran resources together,” said Jake Zimmerman, superintendent of the Kane County Veterans Assistance Commission.
Resources include the VA’s Mobile Medical Unit, a mobile VA clinic that offers health screening and on-site enrollment for veterans. Other resources include Changing Children’s World Foundation, VA benefits specialists, and the VA’s Women Veterans Program.
ECC Veteran Specialist Anitra King says the partnership is in its own way a groundbreaking event.
“This is the first resource fair for veterans and their family to attend to get the resources to assist them with transiting from military service to community to services and education,” she said. “We are excited about having two mobile Vet Centers attending our event.”
Zimmerman said he is excited that Kane County veterans will be able to access so many experts on a local level.
“These are truly great resources, and we are looking forward to having a large veteran turnout,” he said.
