Aurora Police are investigating a Near East Side crash the critically injured an 82-year-old man as he was crossing a busy street at around 7:25 this morning.

The injured man, who police are not yet identifying, apparently walked in front of a 1991 Chevrolet Caprice that was traveling west on New York Street, as he was crossing New York southbound from Kendall Street. The driver of the car, a 24-year-old Aurora man, tried to avoid hitting the older man by swerving to the left, but was unsuccessful. The older man suffered critical injuries and is undergoing treatment at an Aurora hospital.

A citation for driving without proof of insurance is pending against the driver of the car.

The crash is being investigated by the Aurora Police Traffic Division.

8:07 a.m.: Aurora police reported at around 8:07 a.m. Wednesday that a possible vehicle-vs.-pedestrian fatal crash took place at Kendall and New York streets.

The intersection of Kendall and New York was closed in all directions, city of Aurora spokesperson Dan Ferrelli said.

Westbound traffic at New York and Farnsworth intersection was closed.

8:26 a.m. Update: Preliminary investigation indicates an 82-year-old male was crossing at New York and Kendall when he was hit by a vehicle at about 7:25 a.m. He suffered critical injuries.

The intersection of Kendall and New York remains closed in all directions while traffic investigators are on the scene. More as it becomes available.

10:58 a.m. Update: All roads in the area of the crash at New York and Kendall this morning are now open.
