Fig Wort, Elmleaf, Horse Gentian and Rattlesnake Master — villains and heroes from the latest sword and sorcery novel? Nope. Just a list of some of the fall seeds that will be harvested in Elgin this week.

It is a beautiful time to enjoy a brisk fall morning in the preserves, and on Wednesday, you can join Kane County Forest Preserve District volunteers to collect seed at Burnidge Forest Preserve in Elgin.

There are a few new twists this week.

“We will be meeting in the parking lot off Coombs Road, not the campground entrance,” said Volunteer Coordinator Robb Cleave. “It is a great way to explore new preserves, learn about plants and how to identify them and meet some fun people.”

As always, Cleave provides snacks, drinks, tools and other supplies. But you should come prepared for the weather and with a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated.

For a map and address, visit this page on the Kane County Forest Preserve District website.

“We will be focusing on harvesting four different species this week at Burnidge,” Cleave said. “Fig Wort, Elmleaf Goldenrod, Horse Gentian and Rattlesnake Master.  Just to help everyone become better at recognizing plants, please feel free to study up on next week’s target species.”
