Funeral Services Tuesday for West Aurora Art Teacher Gregory Oakes

Funeral services will be held Tuesday for longtime West Aurora High School teacher Gregory Glenn Oakes, 64, of Sandwich, who died Oct. 7 in a single-vehicle crash on Granart Road in unincorporated Big Rock Township.

According to a Beverly Family Funeral Home obituary, Oakes worked as an art teacher at West Aurora High School for 35 years.

“An artist, who saw beauty all around him, he endeavored to expand his artistic abilities throughout his life by creating works of art using several media: printmaking, pottery, drawing and commercial design. Most recently he was awarded as an accomplished photographer,” his obituary says.

“Caring and generous, Greg devoted his life to his family, which was his greatest love and joy.

“His favorite moments throughout his life were family gatherings, particularly those where multiple generations gathered together. He was a loving and caring husband, father of three and grandfather of five.

“The family values instilled in him have and will be passed on for generations. Steadfast in his faithfulness, he was a lifelong Christian. He committed his life to serving God: nurturing and shepherding others on their faith journey and living into the flourishing of his own life as a child of God.”

Visitation will be held at Beverage Family Funeral Home in Sandwich from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Harvest Chapel in Sandwich. Interment will take place at 1:30 p.m., after the luncheon at the church at Lincoln Memorial Park Aurora, IL.
