Media Blogger: Tribune Set to Buy Sun-Times’ Suburban Newspapers

A media blogger who has a licensing agreement with the Chicago Tribune says that the Chicago Tribune is ready to purchase suburban dailies and weeklies — including The Beacon-News and Courier News in Kane County — from the Chicago Sun-Times.

Media writer Robert Feder says a “blockbuster” deal is about to take place and could happen before the end of 2014. Feder says Wrapports LLC would sell the properties to Tribune Publishing,

The newspapers include The Beacon-News, The Elgin Courier-News, the Lake County News-Sun, the Naperville Sun, the Northwest Indiana Post-Tribune, the SouthtownStar, and the 32 weekly newspapers published by the Pioneer Press.

The report has been picked up and expanded upon in a number of reliable online sources, including Poynter, Crain’s and the Chicago Tribune itself.

As of Tuesday night, Tribune and Sun-Times spokespersons have declined to comment to any of the sources mentioned here or to confirm whether there’s a deal in place or on the table.

If the deal were to take place, the “when” is still in question, although media sources keep suggesting “a very aggressive timeline,” possibly as soon as November, in order to make hay with holiday advertising.

The “how much” of the reported transaction remains unanswered, as well.

The Tribune story cited an email sent to Sun-Times employees Tuesday that was kind of a “non-denial denial.” (RIP Ben Bradlee.)

The email from Wrapports CEO Timothy Knight “acknowledged the speculation but did not deny the rumor,” the Tribune reported.
