One More Cider House to Add to Our List: It’s Gould’s in Elburn!
Kane County Connects published an article last week on some of the fun Places to Find Pumpkins, Mazes and More in Kane County, and it was one of our most-read articles last week.
But being fallible as we are, we missed at least one. Here’s a note we received via email that explains better than I ever could:
Larry Gould here, brother to Tom who owns and operates Gould Cider in the current manifestation of its existence. It has been in operation in one form or another since George and son Hiram Pitts Gould planted the first orchard south of Green Road circa 1927.
George’s grandson, Newton, would haul apples to the old press which was first located in Maple Park by the railroad. The press morphed its way to Kaneville, where it resided until Grandpa Newt brought it to its present site on Green Road in 1946, the year I was born. The press is well over 100 years old and still functional.
Why am I relating this to you? Because all the “Johnny Come Lately’s” get all the press and are “discovered” routinely in one form or another while the Goulds, who have been doing the apple and cider bit for about 87 years, are rarely mentioned.
Frustrated in Elburn,
Larry Gould
To Larry: Hope this missive helps make up for the original miss. Gould Cider and Apple Press is located at 2-S-230 Green Road in Elburn, IL.

To our readers: If you’ve got a fun, fall Kane County place you’d like to highlight (and if we missed it in our original article), leave a comment on this post or send an email to ricknagel23@gmail.com.
We love Gould’s, the cider is superb as are the donuts but get there early because they can sell out fast – they are that good. It’s fun to watch the apples being pressed, you can’t see that at most cider mills. And, that old tractor powering the apple press is a sight to see in person. The best.
