“Operation Snowball helped my child gain self-esteem and leadership skills over the four years involved. It was so nice to know that when my child was going out and said I will be with friends from Snowball we did not have to worry.” – Parent
If you’re not familiar with the Greater Fox River Valley Operation Snowball, there’s a very cool event coming up that you might mention to your favorite teenager.
It’s the fall 2014 trip to Lorado Taft Field Campus, and I can recommend it to you wholeheartedly.
That’s because for several years, that fall trip was a treat and a blessing for our oldest daughter, who now is attending Waubonsee Community College. Students come home exhausted from the weekend extravaganza but at the same time full of energy and hope and general positive outlook on the world.
This year’s event takes place Nov. 7 through Nov. 9, and its teen directors are Christian Lewis and Evelyn Olivas. It’s a good idea to make a reservation in advance, because it fills up pretty quickly, as I remember.
The Kane County Regional Office of Education mentions the event in its excellent newsletter. (You can click here to sign up.)
Operation Snowball is a community-based alcohol, tobacco and other drug use prevention program focusing on leadership development to empower youth to lead drug free lives. It’s based in Geneva, IL, but it draws folks from throughout Kane County.
The name originates from the idea that “if I can have a positive impact on you, you can have a positive impact on someone else and the effect snowballs.”
Operation Snowball seeks to bring together high school youth and caring adults to develop a trusting relationship. It is founded on the belief that youth and adults can make responsible decisions when provided with factual information and an opportunity to develop an understanding of one’s self and others.
Operation Snowball got its start back in 1977 in Rockford, IL, when some participants of the Illinois Teenage Institute (ITI) came back to their community and thought, “we could do ITI back home!” In 1979, Operation Snowball, Inc. was created to make the program stronger and to spread the snowball idea to other communities.
