Enter Kane ROE’s New Poster Contest to Raise Awareness of Child Hunger, Homelessness
For National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week (Nov. 15-23, 2014), the Kane County Regional Office of Education is offering a countywide, high school student poster design contest to raise awareness to the issues of homeless children/youth and their rights to ensure equal access to education and services.

Children/Youth Homelessness Statistics
- 33 percent of all homeless people were children/youth under the age of 24.
- Between 1.6 and 2.8 million children/youth runaway and/or are homeless in a year.
- 5 percent to 7 percent of American children/youth become homeless in any given year.
- Unaccompanied youth account for 1 percent of the urban homeless population.
- Children/youth age 12-17 are more at risk of homelessness than adults.
- 46 percent of runaway and homeless unaccompanied youth reported being physically abused, 38 percent reported being emotionally abused, and 17 percent reported being forced into unwanted sexual activity by a family or household member.
- 75 percent of homeless or runaway unaccompanied youth have dropped out or will drop out of school.
Poster Requirements
- Poster size must be 17 inches by 22 inches or larger.
- The concept must focus on homelessness specifically in children/youth and/or education.
- Artists may use any medium to design; questions about media may be emailed to ekamps@kaneroe.org
- Posters must be delivered or mailed to the Kane County Regional Office of Education by 4:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14. If this poses an issue, contact Ellen Kamps.
- The winning artist will receive a $50 Target gift card and the poster will hang in the Regional Office of Education for the school year.
- The winner will be announced on Monday, Nov. 17, on Kane County Connects.
- Submissions must include artist name, grade level, medium, school name, art instructor’s name (if applicable).
