Influenza-like illnesses for the week ending Nov. 15 jumped 66 percent from the previous week and are three times higher than they were six weeks ago, according to a report from the Kane County Health Department.

Influenza surveillance for Kane County Health Department includes the collection of data from hospital emergency rooms, laboratories and public schools. Participants have reported the following aggregate measures:

• About 4.64 percent of participating hospital emergency room visits was for Influenza-Like-Illness. This rate showed a 66 percent increase from the previous week and a three-fold increase from week 40, the beginning of the flu season.

• During Week 46, labs reported that 85 of 409 (20.8 percent) specimens tested for influenza were positive. This was also a 66 percent increase from previous week. Of the 85 positive specimens tested, 76 (89.4 percent) were positive for influenza A, 7 (8.2 percent) were positive for influenza B and 2 (2.4 percent) were positive for A and B. No other specimen tested positive for week ending November 15, 2014.

• ILI absenteeism rate for schools in Kane County was at an average of 0.22 percent. No school in the county had ILI absenteeism rate above the 5 percent threshold. No school was closed.

• No cases of Influenza related ICU admissions and no deaths were reported to the health department in this reporting period.

• To date, no outbreaks of Influenza have been reported from Long Term Care/Assisted Living facilities.
