Geneva Man Pleads Guilty to Sexual Assault
A Geneva man is headed to prison for video recording himself in the act of sexually assaulting a child he knew.
Robert R. Schamne, 23, of the 1000 block of Manchester Course, Geneva, was sentenced late Friday, Nov. 14, 2014, by Circuit Judge John A. Barsanti to 14 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
On Sept. 26, 2014, Schamne pleaded guilty to child pornography, a Class X felony, and criminal sexualassault, a Class 1 felony. The acts were separate incidents. Judge Barsanti accepted the plea.
According to evidence presented in court, between Nov. 18, 2012, and April 3, 2013, Schamne videotaped an act of sexual penetration between himself and the victim, who was younger than 18 years old. Also, Schamne committed a separate act of criminal sexual assault during that period.
The sentence is eight years for the child pornography conviction and six years for the criminal sexual assaultconviction.
According to Illinois law, Schamne must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence for criminal sexual assault, and he is eligible for day-for-day sentencing on the child pornography sentence. Schamne receives credit for 594 days served in the Kane County jail, where he has been held since his arrest in lieu of $300,000 bail.
In addition, Schamne must register for life as a sexual offender in accordance with the Illinois SexualOffender Registration Act.
The case was prosecuted by Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Andrew Whitfield, who is assigned to the Kane County Child Advocacy Center. The case was investigated by the advocacy center and by theGeneva Police Department.
