Kane County was under an “urgent” Winter Weather Advisory from 9 a.m. to midnight Monday, Nov. 24, 2014, according to the National Weather Service.

The alert also included Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Lane, Ogle, Lee and DeKalb counties.

Rain changed to snow Monday morning, with snow continuing until early evening.

Snow accumulations of 2 inches to 5 inches were forecast, especially near the Wisconsin border. West winds were in the range of 20 mph to 30 mph, with gusts nearing 40 mph.

The National Weather Service warned drivers to be especially careful.

“As temperatures drop below freezing, untreated roads will become snow-covered and travel (will be) hazardous,” the alert says. “Blowing snow will also cause reduced visibilities, especially on north-south roadways.”

At 10 a.m., Kane County’s Division of Transportation initiated a “full call” for 25 trucks to be on Kane County roads. The county plan calls for plowing and salting, as needed. For questions about municipal streets, contact your city, village or township road-services department.

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow and blowing snow means that visibility is limited due to a combination of falling and blowing snow.

“Use caution when travelling, especially in open areas,” the alert says.

Although the weather for Tuesday did not include precipitation, some slippery sidewalks and street conditions likely will continue.
